What is the Real Cost of Moving?

Cost of MovingIf you are going to move, you need to know the real cost of relocation. The first thing you need to do is create a moving budget – it really will help you to save money on your move. While most people think of the obvious expenses – the moving truck, movers, and airline tickets – the smaller things sometimes don’t occur to people.

Expenses Before the Move

Of course, before you move, there will be things you need to pay for such as hiring the movers and travel, but have you considered the following:

  • “Insurance” – Moving companies typically provide some valuation coverage (not insurance but most consumers refer to it as such), but their coverage usually isn’t enough to replace your items should they be damaged or lost.  Additional Valuation Coverage to replace items is available.
  • Your Current Residence – If your house is on the market, you’ve got a whole other set of expenses there. Fixing up your house, small repairs, and your realtor will definitely cost you extra money.
  • Rental Costs – If you are renting, you may need to forgo your security deposit if your new home is ready before your lease is up. You may also need to pay rent if you need a place to live while you wait for your new home to be ready.

Expenses During Your Move

There aren’t too many expenses during the move, but there are some things you should keep in mind.

  • Transportation – If you hire movers, you need to get to your new house on your own. If the new house is just across town, this shouldn’t be a problem. If you are moving across the country, this will be an expense you need to consider.
  • Food – During your move, chances are your kitchen won’t be set up, so you will need to feed the family!
