Veronica Mars movie performs sibling swap
The creator of cult teen detective series Veronica Mars, Rob Thomas, has been doing an admirable job of bringing the original stars of the beloved TV show back together for the upcoming movie; however, a scheduling conflict has prevented Leighton Meester from returning in the role of Carrie Bishop. Thomas made the announcement on Sunday that Andrea Estella, the singer in indie pop band Twin Sister, has been recast as “the gossip queen of the 09ers”.
The character of Bishop appeared in the first season of Veronica Mars as a student who falsely accused a high school teacher of having an affair with her. “Sadly, Leighton was doing a different movie during the same time frame on the wrong coast,” Thomas notes. “In the end, she was unavailable. One of the reasons I wanted Leighton, beyond her talent/beauty/history in the show, was that we needed a performer who could sing in this important role. Once it became evident that we couldn’t make Leighton’s schedule work, I decided to cast someone from a band I already wanted in the movie.”
Estella admits that this will be her first movie role. Her casting follows the announcement of the appearance of Gaby Hoffman in the film, alongside returning series stars including Kristen Bell, Enrico Colantoni, Jason Dohring, Ryan Hansen, Tina Majorino, Francis Capra and Percy Daggs III. A Kickstarter campaign to find funding for the movie set records back in March; it was the fastest project ever to reach $1 million, with over $5.7 million pledged in total.
