Saving money and staying green when moving

Green movingMoving is an activity that can be both waste intensive and expensive, from the harsh cleaners and big moving vans that are used in the relocation process to the packing materials, boxes and outdated and unwanted possessions that end up in landfill (hopefully donated though); however, there are some ways in which you can cut down the impact that relocation has on both the environment and your bank balance.

One of the best pieces of advice is to start preparing for the move as early as you can.  When it comes a few weeks before the move, your best intentions to give away or recycle old belongings are likely to go by the wayside; therefore, starting six to eight weeks prior to moving day gives you the best chance to be able to responsibly declutter.  Rushing almost inevitably involves the cutting of corners.

Unwanted items can be given away to charity or to friends or family members.  If you can’t find anyone willing to take your items, you might want to consider selling them online.  Even if you think the item is worthless, you might be surprised at the things that some people are willing to buy.

Getting rid of old goods is crucial to saving money and sparing the environment.  Everything that your moving company relocates for you burns gas and costs money; therefore, if you have items in your possession that have not seen the light of day for more than 12 months, this might be time to let them go.
