Researching School Districts Before You Move

Finding the right school for your child.

If you have kids, it is important to research the best places for your family before you move, especially if your kids are of school age.  Of course, moving to the best place for your family can be a challenging task – what is ideal for one person might not be for another.  However, most families tend to move to a neighborhood that has the best schools for their kids.

While it may seem like common sense, you should try to choose to move to an area with the best school performance.  But do you even know what that means?  If you don’t have any kids, probably not.  Simply look at the reading and math scores for the local schools – check out the private schools as well.  And if your kids are young, look at elementary, middle, and high schools.

If you aren’t sure how long you will be living in the area, you may also want to check into the local colleges.  Of course, your kid might not go to college in the same town you’ve moved to, but you never know.  If money is tight or your child can’t decide which school to attend, if the colleges in your area are decent, then he or she at least has the option to stay home for a while.

Lastly, when you’re checking out the overall education scores, it is helpful to know how many public and private schools are in a given area.  This allows you a variety of options and will also indicate how family-friendly the community is.  The number of schools also indicates how much money a district has for local education.
