Recycle E-Waste before You Move

Recycle your old electronic goods. When moving, many people frequently ask their movers where they can get rid of things like old televisions, laptop computers, desktop computers, stereos, phones, fax machines, printers, scanners, microwaves, and cell phones.  All of these things are known as e-waste and must be disposed of properly.  You can’t just throw these things in the trash and your movers won’t do it for you!

Perhaps you didn’t know you can’t throw these things away – in fact many people are unaware that it is actually illegal.  More than 30 million TV sets are thrown out every year in the U.S. and 70% of the metals in our landfills are from e-waste.  E-waste deposits toxic chemicals into the environment including lead, flame retardants, and mercury.  So, before you move, take appropriate actions with your e-waste.

Since e-waste is such a serious matter, think about what you have before you relocate.  The first thing you should consider is selling these items if they are still in working order.  If you don’t want to sell them, perhaps you can donate them.  There are many organizations that accept old computers, DVD players, and the like for charitable purposes.  If that isn’t possible, you’ve got to find a proper place to recycle these items.

If you don’t know where you can recycle e-waste in your area, simply look online.  There are plenty of e-waste recycling centers and businesses throughout the country.  If you are having a hard time finding such information online, go ahead and ask your moving company.  They will likely have a recommendation or two.
