Rafael Nadal out of London Olympics

Rafael Nadal out of London OlympicsRafael Nadal won the men’s singles in tennis in the 2008 Beijing Games.  An announcement was made on Thursday that Nadal would be withdrawing from the London Games.

Nadal was at Wimbledon when he exited early from the tournament, which was due to knee tendonitis.  Nadal wanted to defend his gold medal and carry the Spanish flag, but unfortunately his knee problem is just too bad to take part in the London Games.  He stated that it was one of the saddest days for him.  He will not be in the opening ceremony anymore because of his decision, which is definitely sad for a man who has spent a career playing tennis and winning a gold medal.

Nadal stated that one of the reasons he decided to withdraw was for his countrymen.  He is not in a condition to compete, so it is better to allow one of the other Spanish players to take his place.  Another person from his team can have the chance to defend the Spanish gold medal for him instead.  Anyone who is in a better condition to compete should be given the chance, according to Nadal, so he stepped down not only due to his own pain but also for those he wishes to support.

Nadal won at Wimbledon in 2008 and 2010; however, most recently he has lost.  He even lost to Lukas Rosol three weeks ago.  It is sad for the Spanish team and for Nadal, but hopefully the lucky man who will replace him will be able to win.
