Preparing for your relocation

Relocation preparation The key to a successful move is planning, and there are a few good tips on how to go about preparing for your relocation to make sure that the move is as smooth and free of stress as it can possibly be.

Between nine and 12 weeks prior to relocation, there are a number of things that should be taken care of.  In this time you should establish a tentative moving date and then begin the process of planning your move.  If your relocation is being paid for by the company for which you work, you should check their policy on moving in order to learn precisely which expenses the company will be willing to reimburse.

Your landlord should be notified about the move, if you have one.  If not, you should begin the process of putting your home on the market and begin looking for somewhere new to live in the place that you are relocating to.  One important decision that you will have to make early on is whether you would like to do at least some of the packing yourself or if you intend to make use of a professional moving company for this purpose.  If you choose the latter, you should start looking for a suitable moving company.

Draw up a list of all the people you will need to inform about your move, including friends and family members, the Post Office, publications, the IRS and utilities companies.
