Preparing for relocation

moving_house2When it comes to moving home, the importance of preparation cannot be overstated.  Two months before you move you should write down a list of all the people and organizations that will need to be informed about your impending change of address.  One of the key factors in avoiding being overwhelmed by the relocation process is being organized.

There are a number of things that will need to be transferred to incorporate your new address after the move, including dental and medical records; school records; pet immunization and medical records; home or rental insurance; your mailing address; car insurance, license and registration; bank accounts, safety deposit box contents and financial records; and credit cards.

There are also a number of things you should cancel and then reorder for your new home so that they are in place when you arrive following relocation.  These include utilities such as cable TV, electric, gas, internet access, telephone and water, as well as grocery and water delivery, garbage and recycling pickups, the refilling and transfer of prescriptions to your new local pharmacist, the return of all rented videos and library books, newspaper and magazine subscriptions, and cleaning and lawn services.  You will also need to inform friends and family members about your new address.

Pillowcases, napkins, T-shirts and towels can be used as packing material.  You should keep your old phone book, as you may have to finalize a few things in connection with your old home after the move and need to have the phone numbers of your contacts to hand.
