National S’mores Day

National S'mores dayNational S’mores Day takes place every year on 10th August.  If anyone attends a campfire, the chances are that there will be s’mores there.  S’mores are loaded with carbohydrates and sugars, but they are so gooey and sticky that they are nothing short of delicious to eat.

Precisely who the individual was that was smart enough to create s’mores remains something of a mystery to this day; however, whoever this person was, they have the eternal gratitude of generations of adults and children all over the United States.  National S’mores Day is a celebration of this delicious summertime treat and is very appropriately placed in the month of August, which is a prime time for campfires.  This is not to say that the consumption of s’mores should be restricted to the campfire or even to the summer.

S’mores are popular with children regardless of the time of the year, and can be cooked in either the microwave or the oven.  The origins of s’mores can be traced back around 90 years to somewhere in the 1920s.  The recipe is believed to be have been created by the Campfire Girls and were very quickly discovered by the Girl Scouts.

S’mores have now become a staple of campfires for all ages.  Folklore around the tasty treats suggests that it was around a campfire that the snack acquired its name, with a young child allegedly eating one and enjoying it so much that they declared “Gimme some more!”
