Moving with pets

Cat and ball3Moving to a brand new home can cause as much stress for your beloved pet as it can for you, but thankfully there are a few tips that should help you to keep your furry friend safe and happy during the course of the move.

Before the move it is a good idea to make sure that you have familiarized yourself with the pet ordinances, pet licensing requirements and leash laws of the state or province that you are making a move to.  The state veterinarian’s office or the State Department of Agriculture should be contacted to find about state or province laws, while you can get in touch with your new local area’s animal control facility, local humane organization or the city clerks’ office in order to find out about local ordinances.  If your intention is to rent an apartment or house, you will need to make certain that you have carefully reviewed the lease to ensure that having pets is allowed prior to moving day.

Another good piece of advice is to talk with your local vet about traveling with your pet, especially if you are already aware that they do not like traveling.  Vets can recommend medication or behavior modification tactics to lessen the stress of travel on your pet as you move.

It is also important to make sure that you have a new vet lined up in your new area.  You might want to ask for a referral from your current vet or do some online research on vets in the place you are moving to.
