Moving preparation

Easing kids into moving houseAs the deadline for the day of the move draws closer, there will be more and more preparations that you need to make to ensure that everything goes smoothly on the big day.  If you are moving to another state and have pets, you will need to make sure that you have made all the necessary arrangements such as rabies inoculations, health certificates, identification tags and immunization shots.  Making arrangements with professional pet movers is something that you might want to seriously consider.  Houseplants can be given away to friends and family members, as you may not be allowed to take plants into some states.

Before the move you should make sure that you have collected any items that you may have lent to other people and in turn return any items that you have borrowed.  If you get to three to four weeks before the move and have still not found a moving company, you should do so without any further delay. Typically you should have your mover set at least 6 weeks before your move.  You need to get quotes from at least three different professional moving companies and check any references that they provide to make sure that their reputation is as good as they claim it to be.  You also need to make absolutely certain that the company you choose is fully insured and licensed.  You can also let your movers know if you are in need of other services such as storage, packing or unpacking.

Around two weeks before relocation you should begin cleaning out your attic, basement and closets.  Check with your moving company about items that are not permitted to be moved and donate or properly handle any materials that cannot be moved, such as ammunition, aerosol cans, acid, matches and fireworks, in a safe manner.  Your power equipment should be drained of fuel and any propane tanks should be recycled or donated.  Arrange with a service technician for your appliances to be disconnected and prepare the appliances for relocation.  Safety deposit lockers should be cleaned out, as should all school and gym lockers, and regular deliveries such as newspapers should be canceled.  All prescriptions should be transferred to your new place of residence.

If you have any antiques, you should arrange to have them valued.  All important documents such as bonds, deeds, insurance policies and wills should be gathered together and carried with you when you move, as should valuable items such as jewelry.  Draperies and rugs should be dry cleaned and left in their wrapping during the process of relocation.  Utility companies should be informed about your move and you should arrange for all utility services to be disconnected once you have moved out of your current home.

Finally, you should start separating out the items that you wish to be transported by your moving company and those that you wish to take yourself.  You also need to make sure that your movers have a contact number for you and have your correct new address.
