Relocating with pet birds
If you have pet birds it is important that you make any house move as stress-free as possible. Here are a few tips to help you to do just this.
While you may think that moving a bird from one home to another is easy ‒ you just pick up the cage and go, don’t you? ‒ this is not always the case. For starters, it is not recommended that you use a birdcage as a pet carrier, particularly for a long-distance move. You can buy a specialist bird carrier for a house move from your local pet store. Never put the bird in the moving company truck – make sure you take it in the car with you.
Try to keep to your pet’s regular schedule, as a disruption in feeding time can make your bird even more stressed. You should also regularly check on your pet during the journey, making sure that there is plenty of water to drink. Keep a check on any environmental factors, such as the heat in the car or the cold if you stop to take a break. Keeping the conditions mild will ensure that the bird will not be affected during the drive. Make sure that nobody in the car smokes and that there is no loud music.
If you are moving from one state to another you may need to check and find out whether there are any regulations that will affect your house move. Some states may need you to have a certificate of good health supplied by your veterinarian.
