City Comparison

How Does Houston Compare to Chicago?

Houston, like Chicago, is a big city with affordable housing. There are significant job opportunities in Houston as a large hub for oil, medical, and tech.  The median household income for Houston is $59,354, which is comparable to Chicago’s $61,749. The median home prices in Houston are lower than Chicago by about $50,000. The cost of living in Texas as a whole is incredibly affordable, even inside a large city like Houston. With no state taxes, your money just goes a bit farther despite the cost of living in the city being a bit higher than Chicago. All things said, living in Houston is very similar financially to living in Chicago.

Commuting in Houston

Houston traffic is notoriously bad and has been getting progressively worse as more and more people migrate to the city for job opportunities. The highway infrastructure cannot keep up with the massive amounts of people pouring into the city and surrounding suburbs. Staying off the main highways during the hours surrounding the workweek rush hour is advised. If you can, live close to your place of work. If you have to commute in from the outskirts, attempt an early or late morning schedule. Houston does have public transportation within the city that can be helpful in getting around efficiently. However, if you are living in one of the many suburbs of Houston, commuting by car is your only choice.
