Moving from Home to the Dorm

Moving into your College DormCongratulations!  You’ve been accepted to the college of your dreams.  But, are you ready for the move from home to the dorms?

Living in the dorm can be the ideal relocation transition from home to college.  You will be able to meet new people and get used to your new city.  Here are some of the basics you’ll need to know before moving to the dorms.

What does the college provide?

It really depends on your college.  Most dorms provide the bare essentials for the room including the desk, chair, bed and mattress, closet, dresser, and curtains.  Before you move, make sure you have obtained a list of what is in the room so you aren’t surprised when you arrive.

What can you bring?

If you want to move more furniture into the dorm you’ll need to ask the college it if is allowed and if it will fit.  Most dorm rooms are fairly small, so you must be sure about bringing extra furniture well before you move in.

What about electronics and appliances?

Always check with the college first, but most dorms allow a microwave, small fridge, television, coffee maker and some allow a hotplate.  Some dorms have limited electrical output which determines the type of appliances you would be allowed to bring.

What are the facilities like?

Every dorm is different, so it is a good idea to do a tour before you move in.  You can expect a laundry facility, a communal kitchen (without dishes), a common area, and a bathroom/shower area.

What else should I find out?

Before relocating to your dorm, you should definitely talk to the college so that there are no surprises.  Here are some more topics you may need to find out about:

  • Check into insurance to protect your possessions.
  • Are you able to ship your belongings before you move in?
  • What is the parking situation?
  • Will there be people to help me move in and how much time will I have?
