Michael Bloomberg’s New Mansion

About a week or so ago, we learned that Michael Bloomberg, current mayor of New York City, bought a new house.  Now, when we say he bought a new house, we don’t mean a quaint little bungalow – we’re talking dropping $20 million to move into a swanky house in the Long Island town of Tuckahoe.

The sprawling Georgian-style estate is situated on a 35-acre parcel of land and has 11 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms.  The house itself is known as Ballyshear.  (We’re not sure what that means, either!)  Additionally, the 22,000 square-foot house is filled with amenities we could only dream of.  The Hampton house also has access to an exclusive golf course.  We wonder when Mr. Bloomberg plans to move in.

With a winding half-mile driveway, we’re sure that Mr. Bloomberg will enjoy plenty of privacy once he moves in.  But did you know that this house comes with a bit of history of its own?

Ballyshear was originally built in 1910 for Charles Blair MacDonald who moved in shortly thereafter.  (You may have heard of MacDonald if you’re a golf fan as he is known for designing the modern golf course.)  F. Burall Hoffman designed the house, which is now covered with ivy and boasts impressive brickwork.  Additionally, traditional English gardens designed by well-known landscape architects Rose Standish Nichols and F. Olmstead, Jr. surround the house.

This isn’t Mr. Bloomberg’s only major real estate purchase.  He has homes on the Upper East Side and in Vail, Bermuda, and London.
