Making the Right Move

How to have a Happy MoveIt doesn’t really matter if you are moving across the country or down the street, you really do need to be prepared.  We’re not talking about having enough moving boxes, packing materials, and bubble wrap.  We mean preparing for the move with your moving company.  All too often, people make the mistake of not asking the right questions or being fully aware of how moving works.

Handy Hints

  • Always research the moving company before you sign a contract.
  • Always ask to see the company’s credentials and check the references.
  • Be aware of how the movers have calculated all costs.  If you don’t understand, ask.
  • Talk about moving valuation.  The government now requires that movers offer you the option of buying standard coverage, beyond what is covered in their own policy.
  • Find out whether the movers are just brokers or an actual moving company.  They have to tell you – it’s the law.
  • Read all documents and ask questions when in doubt.
  • Always be at the site of loading and unloading.  If you can’t be there, make sure that you have someone you trust there in your place.
  • Make sure that you have a copy of the inventory checklist – make sure everything makes it onto the truck and off it on moving day.

Things to Avoid

  • Never hire a moving company that requires you to pay with cash only.
  • If your mover says you don’t need a copy of “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move,” they’re wrong.
  • Refuse to pay for the move until all of your items have been unloaded and placed into your new home.  Remember, the paperwork must be signed only after the move is complete.
  • If you don’t understand something, don’t sign it!  If the moving company or broker can’t clarify things for you, find another company.
  • Make sure you pack items that are of high value yourself.  Jewelry, important documents, and account records should stay with you throughout the move.  While a reputable moving company will likely have employees you can also trust, why take the risk?
  • If you’ve got damaged goods, make a claim right away.  Do not wait a few days or weeks – the longer you wait, the harder it will be to prove mover liability.  Documentation and pictures are key.

Moving is stressful, there’s no doubt about it.  Feel free to print this checklist of do’s and don’ts out to keep on hand as you prepare for your move.  Keeping these points in mind will allow the peace of mind that we all need during any relocation.
