Make moving a smoother experience
Moving can be one of the most stressful experiences of our entire lives, but the good news is that there are a number of handy hints that, if followed, can help to make the entire endeavor a good deal smoother and considerably less likely to give you a headache.
One good tip is to get three written in-home estimates from moving companies. You should be very wary of any moving company that gives you an estimate over the phone or via the internet without having come to see your home. Professional movers will need to see absolutely everything that you intend to take with you to your new home, including any possessions that you have stored in attics, garages, sheds, basements or other storage areas. You should also point out any items that you think might require special attention.
You should avoid making any big down payments. Carriers who are seeking big down payments in order to hold down dates or reserve services should be treated with caution, and you should never put your signature to any blank forms.
Get hold of and make sure you have read the three required pre-move documents from your moving company. These documents will include brochures such as Ready to Move? and Your Rights and Responsibilities, as well as details about the arbitration program that the mover should be a participant in. These documents are required by law for all interstate shipments and should be provided along with your estimate.
