Handling your own PCS move

Military menSometimes military families prefer to handle their own PCS move rather than deal with everything through their local services. This is referred to as a personally procured move and it is sometimes the best choice because of the flexibility that it offers; however, handling your own military relocation can put you at risk of injuries connected with the move. Here are a few tips for a safer move.

First of all, make sure that the boxes are packed well and that none are just too big and/or heavy for one person to lift. You should also make sure that you are wearing the appropriate clothing on moving day if you are going to be lifting a lot of boxes yourself; for example, strong shoes are needed and you may require gloves.

When packing make sure that any flammable items are not involved. If you have household chemicals and items such as paint thinners then make sure that you get rid of these long before moving day to reduce any risks.

Taking a break for a drink and a snack will help everybody involved to stay hydrated and give them energy. Moving day can be stressful, even if you have hired professional movers, and you do not want to find that everyone is flagging partway through the day.

It is a good idea to arrange for childcare for any young children while the move is underway. In this way you can concentrate on the practical aspects of your military move rather than worrying about the kids.
