Financial advice for a permanent change of station

Permanent change of stationIn the midst of a permanent change of station – also sometimes referred to simply as a PCS – service members spend an average monetary figure of $1,725 in costs that are not eligible for reimbursement.  When you take into consideration the fact that the great majority of personnel in the military are likely to make a move once every two to four years, this can end up being a substantial amount of money.

The good news, however, is that there a few tips that you can follow to make certain that you do not end up paying more than you really need to and to reduce the stress and financial costs associated with a permanent change of station.

To reduce the cost of relocation you must first be fully aware of what is reimbursable by the military and the US government.  This is far too much of a varied and complicated topic to cover effectively here, but anyone who is faced with a permanent change of station should be sure to consult with their base transport and finance resources to find out which expenses can be reimbursed by the government.

A move is usually handled by the Transportation Management Office, which will plan your relocation with a moving company and cut down on a lot of your stress and worry.  You can also choose to do a DITY (Do It Yourself) move, 95% of the costs of which are reimbursable by the government.
