Downsizing your home

Home DownsizingAs time goes on, people have a tendency to accumulate a lot of stuff.   People have drawers full of different things, from gifts that have never been used, and most likely never will be, to furniture we do not need but do not like the idea of getting rid of. There are also likely to be items that serve no purpose but are hard to part with, for no reason other than familiarity.

If you are planning to move to a new and smaller home then the time has come to rid yourself of all of this excess baggage and strip down to just the bare essentials.   The first step to downsizing prior to relocation is to assess what you actually do and do not really need.   If that treadmill or Stairmaster has been clogging up space for years without getting used, would it not be a better idea – even if you did get around to finally taking up exercising – to invest in a pair of walking or running shoes instead?  It would certainly take up a lot less space.

Deciding what things you really do need and what you do not requires you to take a long hard look at your daily life and make a priority of the items and activities that make up your actual lifestyle, rather than things that you would like to be part of your lifestyle but never seem to get around to.

Walk through your home and assess the items you come across, such as books and furniture.   How often have you used them in the last year?  If you think you could live without something, you probably should.
