Does Your Resume Contain Unsavory Words?

How to improve your resume.Getting a job in today’s economy may seem like a miracle for so many people, so if you are on the prowl, having a good resume is going to really make a difference.  So whether you’ve been out of work for a while or are looking for a job in a new city because your spouse has relocated, let us help you with your resume.
First of all, you’ve always heard that your resume is supposed to give the prospective employer a sense of who you are on paper – before they meet you.  So, many people list their attributes, talents, and skills to help achieve that goal.  While that is fine, there are some words that employers are just tired of seeing.  Take a look:

  • Loyal
  • Helpful
  • Reliable
  • Trustworthy
  • Innovative
  • Dependable
  • Seasoned
  • Skilled
  • Results-Oriented
  • Detail-Oriented
  • Motivated (or Highly Motivated)
  • Versatile
  • Self-Starter
  • Great Sense of Humor
  • Independent
  • Educated
  • Experienced

You might want to take a look at your resume – before you move – and make some edits.  Of course, you want to describe yourself, but you also need to give some examples of why such descriptions apply to you.

Remember, hiring managers don’t want to hire people just because they say they are totally awesome – they want to know that they’re a good fit for the company.  A laundry list of descriptive words might make an HR professional glance at your resume and simply move on.

A good resume will help you stand out and might even help you snag an awesome relocation package if the company is far away!
