Disney gets full Indiana Jones rights

Walt DisneyThe Walt Disney Company is already in full possession of the rights to the biggest Lucasfilm franchise, Star Wars, following their deal last year, but now the Mouse House has concluded a deal that also gives them full control over Lucasfilm’s other huge franchise – Indiana Jones.

According to a report from Deadline, Disney has now gained both distribution and marketing rights to any future possible Indiana Jones sequels from Paramount Pictures.  This deal was the last obstacle standing in the way of a potential fifth movie in the iconic series; although it is still not clear precisely when this might happen.  Although Disney’s going ahead with the deal indicates it is probably a matter of when rather than if, there are no current plans for another film.

Paramount will still own the distribution rights to the first four films in the series but will also receive an undisclosed amount of cash from any and all future Indiana Jones movies that Disney creates and releases, making it similar to the deal they worked out for both Iron Man 3 and The Avengers when Marvel jumped ship to Disney.  Paramount is therefore likely to end up making a considerable amount of money by effectively doing nothing.

The real question on the lips of moviegoers is whether or not there should actually be any more Indiana Jones films.  The belated fourth film in the series, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which emerged almost 20 years after the third film, was blasted by critics and fans alike.
