Avoiding Online Job Hunting Mistakes

Make sure you find the right job online.Moving can be hard on you, especially if you need to find a job in your new city.  Often, a family moves when one spouse gets a better job or is transferred to another company branch.  This often requires the other “trailing” spouse to find a job in the new area.  Job hunting today can be just as, if not more, stressful than the relocation itself, particularly when the economy is in such turmoil.

So, are there any tricks to finding a job?  The Internet has proven to be an invaluable tool, but it all comes down to knowing how to use it.  We’ve put together a list of common online job hunting mistakes that many people make while getting ready to move.  Here’s what to avoid:

  1. Go ahead and use the big websites like Monster and CareerBuilder, but don’t use them exclusively.  Check the smaller job boards and job board aggregates as well.
  2. Don’t job hunt using your current employer’s email account.  It doesn’t look good to the new employer and may actually get you fired before you find another job.
  3. Don’t blast out your resume without some thought.  Customize each cover letter and make each one specific to the company to which you are applying.
  4. Think about your privacy.  If you don’t want your contact information posted, check the privacy settings on whatever resume service you use.

You might also find the most current job postings on individual company websites.  Check out the companies in the area to which you are moving and you may find a job just right for you!  And remember; don’t rely just on the Internet for your job search when you relocate.  While the Internet has clearly taken the lead for job postings, take a look at the local print newspaper and local job magazines as well.
