Are Moving Companies Registered with the Government?

Check your Moving Company are Registered with the Government

Most people don’t really know a whole lot about moving companies.  In fact, the whole idea of relocating can really stress a person out, so they may go out of their way to avoid learning anything on the topic.  However, that really isn’t the best way to handle things.

If you are getting ready to move, you should learn as much as you can about the moving industry to avoid scams and have a successful move.  One thing that might come up is whether or not moving companies should be registered with the government.  The short answer is yes.

All interstate moving companies are supposed to be registered with the Department of Transportation, or DOT.  Upon registration, the moving company is issued a DOT number, which essentially is the company’s identification number.  Additionally, moving companies that move across state lines must also be insured and licensed.

If you are preparing for an interstate relocation and the moving company you’ve considered isn’t registered, insured, or doesn’t have a DOT number, run the other way!

When a moving company registers with the Department of Transportation, the DOT will list basic information about that company on their website and in the public record.

Such information includes the location of the movers’ headquarters, registration status, safety rating, and contact information.  Just remember, the safety rating won’t always be available – that does not mean the company isn’t reputable, just that there isn’t any record.
