The City Commission voted to let the White Challis Redevelopment Company, which is based in Daytona Beach, to move forward with its project on Woodland Boulevard and Church Street. It has given its approval to an acquisition and redevelopment agreement between White Challis and the City.
White Challis is to undertake the mixed-use development of 1.86 acres of land that was formerly the YMCA of downtown DeLand in phases that will start from next year and continue until 2017. The project is at this stage expected to include eight two-story townhouses, 14 new condominium units, and eight two-story brownstone-style homes for people to move into, in addition to 3,900 feet of commercial space.
Jack White, a partner in White Challis Redevelopment Company, is more than pleased by the decision. “We’re real excited,” he says. “So much to look forward to. We’ve got a great project and the sooner we start, the better. DeLand’s a great city and we look forward to finally get the chance to market it.”
The project has been a long time coming, according to City Manager Michael Pleus, who notes that many in the community have high hopes regarding its chances for success. “There are a lot of people who I think are ready to see this come to fruition,” he notes.
